In Primary 7a, we love Christmas time! Miss McCurdy is so impressed with how well we learned our Christmas song...in Latin! On Friday we managed to get it just right and we are now really looking forward to the Christmas Concert next week. Remember your reindeer and angel constumes everyone :0 ) We are going to be doing lots of Christmas themed activities. For example, next week we will be completing a cooperative challenge to create a new verse for 'Jingle Bells'. We will be learning all about Christmas Symbolism and giving each other some special gifts.

Our class is strating to look a little different as we have been busy getting ready to move back to our new and improved Kirklandneuk. There are certainly things we will miss about our current building, such as our 60 stair climb :) We can't wait to return to our former building and we are keen to take on the responsibility of helping our buddies to settle in.

We have learned all about Japan this term and had the chance to look at interesting artifacts. Miss McCurdy and Primary 7 would like to thank Mrs Deeghan for allowing us to have these- they have really enriched our learning. We have also had the opportunity to learn about martial arts and have participated in Kendo and Karate sessions. A huge thank you to Mr Harrison and his colleagues for helping us with our topic.

We know in Primary 7 that the best way to learn is to do it together. In Technology we have been creating structures, including some towers made from spaghetti and Jelly Babies. Mrs Sloan put us into teams to make slave shapes, with the challenge of making them float. It was great fun and you will be glad to know that in most cases the crew (or our lego figures) survived!

This Term we are looking forward to learning all about Japan. We will be creating our learing plan this week. We will also be exporing energy and learning about alternatives to fossil fuels. We will end the term by finding out all about Christmas Symbolism.

We are looking forward to Parents Evening, the Christmas Fayre and performing at the Christmas Concert. Have a look at our pictures!

What a nice afternoon Primary 7a had at the Robertson Park. After weeks of perfecting our tennis skills, we took to the courts to play a proper game. Miss McCurdy was so impressed by our serve, as well as our return shots. The fact that the sun shone made the afternoon all the more enjoyable.

As the end of term approaches, we are looking forward to the End of Term Reward :) We have a fun challenge to complete this Friday, but Miss McCurdy has decided to keep it a surprise. This week we will also be completing lots of Science experiments in order to explore the Structure of the Earth.

Well we've made it...all the way to the top of the school! What an exciting year it's set to be. So far we have already hosted the first whole school assembly. Miss McCurdy was so proud of us all for learning our lines and singing beautifully. Thank you to all our family and friends who helped us at home and those who came along to see the performance.

As well as practising for our assembly, we have also been busy with our new roles as Primary 7. We have been helping our P1 buddies settle into Kirklandneuk by reading stories and helping them at lunch. As the weather hasn't been the best, we have also been getting to know our Wet Weather Classes. We are really happy to have so many responsibilities and this is set to continue as we assist at Parent Run Library and run the Primary 7 club.

We have also created our learning plan for social subjects and Miss McCurdy is teaching us all about slavery. This term we are set to have fun experimenting in Science, as we encounter space exploration- no consents needed :)

Now that our class are all settled in, we have agreed on our rules, class charter and qualities. We are all looking forward to the year ahead!

You have shown just how wonderful you all are this week. You looked so elegant at your Leavers' Dance and did yourselves proud on the dance floor. Even though you are all in need of a break, you have continued to give your best all the way to the end. You truly deserve to leave Kirky on a high!

Summer Countdown

We can't believe we only have 2 weeks left at Kirklandneuk Primary. A lot has been happening this term and we had a fantastic day at 'I'm a Primary 7...Get me out of Here'. Miss McCurdy was a little scared of the spiders though. As well as this, we have been on our class trip to Scotland Street School and we completed our Victorians topic with a study of Florence Nightingale.

Miss McCurdy was very impressed with our presentations on our experience at Primary School. Thank you to all those at home who helped us to dig through the photo archives.

With just a fortnight to go we are busy preparing for our Leavers' Dance and Assembly. As well as perfecting our Ceilidh dancing, we will also be learning songs.

We'll be sure to leave some final words from Primary 7 before the Summer! :)

Primary 7 had a really exciting lead up to the Spring break and we revaled our Secret topic to our friends and family. The Open Evening was a huge success and Primary 7 and Miss McCurdy would like to thank all those who made it such an eventful night.

Our last term at Kirklandnek will no doubt be an adventurous one, as we finish our yearbooks, organise our Leavers' Dance and engage with more exciting learning. I wonder what our topic could be this term...

Hard at Work

Not that we're not always, but at the moment Primary 7 are really busy! We are right in the middle of our Surprise Topic and are having so much fun transforming our classroom. Our co-operative teams are great and Miss McCurdy has us calling out our celebrators on a daily basis. Not only are we drawing, painting, designing, modelling and building, we've also been writing, planning, note-taking and discussing. We really can't give too much away, but we have been learning about co-ordinates, fables and flowering plants.

As well as our integrated topic, we are also in teams during ICT so that we can divide the sections for our yearbook. Some of us were a little embarrassed getting our picture taken, but we're sure to look good on an A4 page. Primary 7 have also been attending trampolining at Renfrew High and we've learned how to do half turns and jumps.

We are getting so excited about our upcoming residential and activity week. All of our questions have been answered by Mrs Sloan and now we just can't wait to go! We know all we'll have room for in the suitcase is spare clothes and wellies. Miss McCurdy says she will miss us all while we are away on our adventure. We'll hopefully get the chance to send her and our families nice postcard to keep in touch.

Primary 7 are looking forward to next weeks parents' night. Some of us are coming along to help and we love doing things which allow us to be responsible citizens. Stay tuned for another update from Primary 7.

Secret Topic

Primary 7 have been working extremely hard to transform their classroom into...well we can't actually say, but we can tell you about all the skills we have been developing.

To begin our Secret Topic we carried out a carousel to decide on the things that we wanted to learn about. Miss McCurdy was very impressed by the ideas we came up with. We then split into co-operative teams and appointed leaders. We all have roles to fulfil and our teacher thought the 'perfection police' was a great improvement on quality controller.

We have been developing our creative skills by planning and designing our...art work! We have used colour in imaginative ways and have been paying careful attention to shape and pattern. Our writing has been great fun, especially since it's our own ideas from our carousel.

As well as Secret topic, we have continued to work with Reid Kerr on our Yearbook. We enjoyed our last session of curling at Xscape and are about to embark on a 2 week trampoline session. Primary 7 learned a lot from the speakers who attended our World of Work week and working with St James' on Work Cluedo was really fun!

We are looking forward to parents night and our open evening because we know Miss McCurdy will have lots of good things to say about all of our hard work! Presumptuous...just a little! We'll keep you posted on our progress.

Merry Christmas

Primary 7 have worked exceptionally hard this term and have ended oh a seasonal high. We really enjoyed performing at the Christmas Concert and we think our rendition of Slade went down a treat. Miss McCurdy would like to thank all of the mums, dads, aunts and grandparents who worked hard to make us look spectacular! Special thanks also goes to Sophie Smyth and Rachael Bryson for choreographing our excellent dance moves!

As part of our reward we have already enjoyed a DVD afternoon and a class party. We still have a Panto to look forward to on Tuesday and we're going to be baking this week-yum!

Enterprising Learners

Primary 7 worked very hard on their Enterprise Project and had great success at the Christmas Fayre. Over the part few weeks, we have designed and created games for customers to play. These included Matching pairs, Christmas Cuties and Guess Rudolph's country. We carefully costed our materials and prizes and managed to make a profit. When it comes to business, Primary 7 are right on the money!

We've settled really quickly into our new building and we love the Victorian design and our large classroom. As we are on the top floor, the stairs to our class are keeping us Super fit! Good training for the athletics club. This term is set to be an excellent one as we are learning lots of new things and proud to be in charge of the Christmas Fayre Enterprise.

Last week we started learning about WW2 and it is a really interesting topic. From aircraft to world leaders, this topic is going to provide us with lots of opportunities for collaborative group work and critical skills. Lots of people have already brought in things from home and Jodie had a picture of her Great Grandfather in his uniform. As we have already started researching the topic ourselves at home, Miss McCurdy says that we are going to do a Personal Project. We get the choice about what to write about and then we will share it with the class. Primary 7 all plan to watch films, read books and use the internet to learn more about world history.

We are still buzzing with our usual responsibilities and these have been extended with selling poppies and helping at Parent Run Library. Primary 7 really enjoyed talking with parents at Parents night. We really feel that we are developing our capacities as Responsible Citizens.

Miss McCurdy and Primary 7 would like to congratulate the pupils from our class who represented us in the General Knowledge Quiz at Arkleston. Ganesh, Lewis, Jordan and Dalia worked extremely hard to scoop Kirky first place. Well Done Guys!

Author Ross MacKenzie Visits P7

Primary 7 enjoyed a visit from Ross MacKenzie, author of 'Zac and the Dream Pirates'. We got to ask Ross lots of questions about being an author and learned about the world of publishing. In preparation for the visit we created dream pictures of our own, using everything from pastels to glitter. Ross had the very difficult task of selecting the best one.

Rebecca won the dream pictures competition and received a signed copy of Ross' book.

Thank you to Ross for taking the time to speak to us and for answering all of our questions. It's really inspired us to write!

Primary 7 have got off to a great start and we have already had to demonstrate our ability to work together in order to get ready for our assembly, 'Back to School with God'. Miss McCurdy is so pleased with how hard we have worked to learn all our words and songs. We are really enjoying working with our friends from P.6/7. We're sure the assembly will be a great success and are looking forward to seeing our families there.

Around the school, Primary 7 have been very organised...and it's a good job because we have lots of responsibilities to fulfil. Being monitors, buddies and DJ's is great fun! We recently wrote twisted fairy tales for our P.1 Buddies and will get the chance to read them on our visit tomorrow afternoon.

As well as the assembly, we have been doing lots of other things in class. As part of our Learning Journey, we are learning about Hindu Weddings. We have really enjoyed exploring India and looking at how Hindu's use astrology to pick their wedding day. Our class display is very impressive with our wedding leaflets and Mandir pictures.

In Science we are learning about Space Exploration and have used maths to explore the radius and diameter of planets. Next week Miss McCurdy is teaching us how to make rockets. We have to measure how far they travel...not too far we hope!

David, an ICT lecturer from Reid Kerr College, has been visiting our class once a week. We are learning lots of new skills and are looking forward to creating our Yearbook.

We will begin our topic of Global Citizenship next week, where we will be learning about Children's Rights. We will be doing lots of writing around this, including writing to world leaders.

Welcome to Primary 7's class blog. Here's the place to visit to find out about Primary 7 news and to get updates on what we've been learning.

We've had a really good start to the year and Miss McCurdy is very pleased with how hard we have been working. We are really enjoying our extra responsibility within the school and will be continuing to help our Primary 1 buddies over the course of the year.

We recently voted for our House Captains, Pupil council and Anti-Bullying reps and we'll announce soon who the successful candidates were.

This term we are learning about Hindu Weddings and today we created a learning plan about what we wanted to find out. We will also be exploring space and carrying out lots of experiments. We'll post pictures of our learning soon!

SPORTS DAY
The pupils had a great day on Tuesday 22nd June as it was our school sports day. In the morning the senior sports took place where the children in Primary 6 and 7 competed to find out who the girls and boys sports champions of 2010 would be. In the afternoon the P3-7 had their potted sports events and were lucky to enjoy the warm sunshine.

LEAVERS' DANCE

On Monday 21st June the primary 7 attended their Leavers' Dance at the Normandy Hotel. The pupils arrived in style in limos, hummers and even motorbikes. The girls looked stunning in their fancy dresses and the boys looked very handsome in their kilts and suits. They were entertained a Ceilidh Band called Scotia and enjoyed a tasty buffet during the evening. The children were joined by many members of staff and invited guests to celebrate their special evening. The dancing was very impressive and the children had a ball!

END OF TERM REWARD

On Wednesday 23rd June 2010 the pupils were rewarded with a session from Jammimg Dancing for their excellent behaviour. In just one hour the children learned a new dance and had great fun dancing with their friends. Well done to P7 who all attended the reward due to their excellent behaviour.

Primary seven have recently returned from their residential trip to Ardgour. They ventured off to Ardgour on the 10th of May 2010 and returned on the 15th, exhausted from their funfilled holiday.
They were entertained with thrilling events each day including:
Zip wire down a mountain
Canoeing
Kayaking
Low ropes course
High lopes course
ADVENTURE DAY ( mixture of activities)
Rock climbing/ Abseiling
All of the activities were funfilled - some harder than others. It was a brilliant holiday for P7.

On Wednesday 5th May primary 7 got the chance to go to Choices for Life. A special event for all primary 7’s to see what to do with their lives. Singers such as Bandito and Girls Can’t Catch performed for us. By the look of everyone's facial expressions it was a really enjoyable time.

25 pupils from Kirklandneuk Primary School went to the North West of Scotland to a small town called Ardgour. Once we arrived we went to a Christian organisation called Abernethy. We took part in many activities like dodgeball and many more.

The Primary 7 Induction Days

In term 4 primary 7s from all over Renfrew and other places had their two induction days at Renfrew High School. The induction days gave them a taste of what their years in high school would be like. The pupils came back buzzing and saying that they really enjoyed it.

When the primary 7s went up they were split into their practical classes. They also had some easy work to do while they were there. They made their own way to school which meant a long journey for most pupils. However they stayed in the grounds for playtime and lunch time.

All of the children really enjoyed it even though they said that it was a bit scary and most of them can’t wait to go up.

TERM 4

ACTIVITY WEEK
In May, six of our pupils took part in an exciting and busy Activity week. They spent their week visiting a range of places and working on a range of activities in school. On the Monday the children had the opportunity to try out Tubing at Bellahouston Ski centre. The children hadn't tried this before and had a lot of fun learning how to do it. In the afternoon they visited House for an Art Lover. This is a house that was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and displays his famous designs and architecture. The children also visited Kelvin Grove Art Gallery where they took part in a challenge which involved exploring the art gallery to find out some interesting facts. The final trip was a visit to Amazonia which the children loved. They got to see a wide range of interesting creatures from the rainforest and many of the children were even brave enough to hold snakes and millipedes. The feedback from the trip was very positive and the children seemed to have a very enjoyable week.

ARDGOUR
The rest of the P7s ventured off to Ardgour for their residential trip to Ardgour. They visited an outdoor activity centre in the north-west of Scotland. The children enjoyed taking part in a wide range of new sports such as archery, canoeing, kayaking, a zip-wire ride, outdoor assault course, rock climbing and abseiling. The children had a fantastic week and were extremely well behaved. The were very positive in their feedback about their trip and will remember this experience for a very long time.

CHOICES FOR LIFE
As part of our Health programme this term, the children attended the Choices for Life trip at the SECC. The trip was very enjoyable as the children were entertained by a range of music artists, PACE theatre group and the hosts from Real Radio. However, there was a very important message given at the concert about making important choices in life. There was information about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. PACE performed an excellent drama about these dangers and the problem of peer pressure. We hope the pupils will remember these powerful messages for their future to help guide them in making the right choices.

THE RAINFOREST JOYNING THE LEARNING

Our secret has finally been revealed. For the last 7 weeks Primary 7 has transformed their classroom into a magnificent rainforest. The children have studied lots of aspects related to the rainforest and learned a great amount of new facts. They have completed a wide range of writing tasks throughout JTL and have made great attempts to up-level their writing to meet their writing targets. The children created a waterfall and river to run through the centre of the class. They also built a tribal hut. The topic came to an end at our special Open Evening on Thursday 25th March. We had a brilliant turnout. All our parents came to celebrate the children's hard work and were amazed by the high standard of work produced. I am very proud of all the children and their super effort. All the hard work really paid off!

HIP HOP DANCE

Primary 7 and Primary 5/6 had a very enjoyable afternoon learning how to do Hip Hop Dancing. Two dance teachers came in to teach us a range of dance moves and were impressed at how well the children picked up the moves. It was hard work but lots of fun!

REID KERR COLLEGE - EARTH CALLING CHALLENGE

This week we were visited by staff from Reid Kerr College to launch a new project called Earth Calling. The staff came to teach us about ways we can make a difference and help to save energy. The children were learning about renewable energy sources. They had the chance to put tiles on a roof and learn how to put on a solar panel. The children went outside and put on their Health and Safety gear before taking part in the activity. The children also watched a short video to help reinforce what they can do to make a difference. As part of our science and eco-schools work, the children will work on an on-line course to teach them more about renewable energy sources during term 4. At the end the pupils will receive a certificate for all their efforts from the college.

ENTERPRISE

Continuing with our Enterprise focus on Skills for work, the pupils were very fortunate to have a representative from a company called Construction Skills visit them this week. They were further developing their knowledge of the construction industry as well as developing their team work and communication skills. The pupils used wooden dowells and elastic bands to construct a giant tetrahedron measuring 4 metres wide by 4 metres tall. The children were taught how to construct a small tetrahedron to begin with and in total they had to make 64 of them. The tetrahedrons were then put together to make a larger structure before they were finally joined to make the giant tetrahedron. The pupils were just amazed at what they managed to construct. They had such fun completing the challenge and worked very effectively together. Many children commented on how nervous they felt as the last part was attached as some repair jobs needed done. But working together as a Quality Team they succeeded. The children all felt very proud of their efforts.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE
The pupils have been raising funds for their Leavers' Dance in June and so have carried out a range of activities. The pupils took charge of the PRL at the Christmas Fayre and had a range of games running for the children to play such as matching Christmas pairs, Lucky Advent Dip, Help the Lost Monkey and the Snowman's Numbers. These games were very popular and the children did well at selling by encouraging children to play. It was a very successful morning and the children raised about £145. A super start!

SPONSORED DANCE

The pupils then chose to do a Sponsored Scottish Country Dance as part of our Homecoming celebrations during Scottish week. The pupils planned the event by sending a letter and sponsor form home to parents. The children showed off their wonderful dancing skills for an
afternoon and had great fun doing it. They danced some of their favourites such as the Dashing White Sergeant and the progressive Canadian Barn Dance. So far we have raised over £160 and there is still more money to come in. Another great success P7.

TRIP TO METROPOLITAN COLLEGE

Last Friday Primary 7 visited the Metropolitan College in Glasgow as part of their Enterprise work. They visited the Construction department and developed skills in joinery, plastering and brick-laying. The pupils listened well to the staff and thoroughly enjoyed the tasks. The pupils all created their own plaster models and we'll enjoy painting them before Christmas.

PLASTERING

BRICK-LAYING
The pupils used bricks and mortar to build their own pyramid wall. This was a tricky task to ensure their wall was stable and level. They used the tools provided and a spirit level to help them along.

JOINERY
The third activity the pupils worked on was building bird boxes in the joinery department. The pupils were led by Richard who helped them to construct their bird box using wood, nails and glue. They showed a great improvement in using hammers by the end of the session and we survived with no injuries! The pupils were really proud of their achievement and were keen to show off their end product. We are very fortunate that the college will deliver the boxes to us soon.

The pupils ended their day playing Quizdom which they enjoyed too. It was a very interesting day and the pupils absolutely loved their time there. A big thanks to the staff at the college for the wonderful day. The pupils learned about skills for work and further developed their technology skills. The college praised the children for their excellent behaviour. Well done, P7!

TRIP TO REID KERR COLLEGE

The children further developed their technology skills and enterprise focus by visiting the Construction department at Reid Kerr College. The children spent a day taking part in a range of activities such as joinery - building wooden planters for the school playground, roofing - tiling a roof, plastering a wall and painting and decorating. The children had a fantastic time and were very proud of their achievements. The staff were very supportive working with the pupils and were also impressed by the enthusiasm and good behaviour displayed by the class.

Term 2

The Primary 7s have all really enjoyed the first term and are now looking forward to the exciting projects and trips arranged for Term 2. The pupils are going to be visiting and working with Reid Kerr college, Paisley and the Metropolitan College, Glasgow as part of their Enterprise and Eco-schools projects. The pupils will visit both colleges and get an insight into life in the Construction Industry where they will have the opportunity to develop their skills by making exciting items in the workshops. DRAMA
The pupils enjoyed a session this week with a Drama specialist from a local drama school. The pupils worked well in groups to act out scenarios and developed their improvisation skills through a range of activities. The drama teacher praised the children for their excellent control and behaviour. Well done P7!

HARVEST GIFTS
Last Friday the Primary 7 pupils enjoyed their task of delivering Harvest gifts to elderly members of the local community. Many people who received the gifts were very grateful to all the children in the school for their gift. The pupils enjoyed the experience.

ROTARY CLUB QUIZ NIGHT
A team of P7 pupils took part in a light-hearted quiz this week organised by the Renfrew Rotary club. The event took place in Newmains Primary school. Each of the 5local primary schools entered a team and a mascot for support. Our Kirky Croc was there to cheer on our time who did very well. The quiz involved a range of general knowledge questions. We are very proud of our pupils for taking part and each child received a certificate and book token.

ECO-SCHOOLS
As part of our Eco-schools task in caring for the Environment, we are taking part in a couple of litter picks in the school grounds with the Primary 1s and Primary 2/3. This will be useful in ensuring our playground is well maintained; it will support us in working towards our next Green Flag and will encourage the infants to get involved in our mission.

Operation Smile

This week Primary 7 will embark on Operation Smile. The campaign being supported by Blue Peter will help to fund vital operations in India and around the world.

It involves the design and manufacture of surgical gowns from second hand t-shirts. Could Primary 7 children please bring an old, clean t-shirt - the bigger the better so we will take mums' and dads' t-shirts as well.

OUR FIRST TERM IN P7

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
We have settled well into Primary 7 and are enjoying being the top of the school. We are setting a great example to the rest of the school with our behaviour and have taken on all our new responsibilities. We are monitors at break and lunch, wet weather monitors and infant buddies to support the infants in playing games. We also have taken on the role of Buddies for the new Primary 1s. We have helped them settle into the school by giving them a tour; reading stories to them and taking them to the lunch hall to have lunch with them.

As we are in a new class with a new teacher, we have been building our learning community to learn to work together effectively and be a quality team. We have been completing critical skills challenges as a way to learn together and we created our dodecahedrons to represent our home teams. We presented these to the class.

TOPIC
We are studying the life and work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh as part of our social subjects and are very much enjoying this. His work and designs have inspired many pieces of our art work for this term.

ACTIVE LEARNING
In line with a Curriculum for Excellence we are enjoying lots of active learning across many areas of the curriculum. We have completed Critical skills challenges, used ICT to support our learning, had a guest speaker in to support our RME topic. Below are some photos of us hard at work!

ECO-SCHOOLS
As part of our Eco-schools project Primary 7 are responsible for developing our local environment. As a class we have entered a Community Regeneration Project on the Scotland in Focus Website. We planned a project to help improve our school playground and its facilities. We had to apply by writing about why the playground is important to us, what we would like to acheive in our project and provide photos to support our entry. We applied for money to support our ideas and are waiting to hear if we are successful. Here are some pictures of the pupils preparing for this task.

ASSEMBLY
On Friday 18th September we performed the first school assembly - Back to School With God. We all learned our lines well and our singing was beautiful. The assembly was about the new responsibilities we face in P7 and about the people that are there to support us including God. We asked the parents to give us feedback in the form of Two Stars and a Wish and we were delighted by the fantastic comments. Thank you!

Final Weeks in P7

On Tuesday 16th June the Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils took part in Senior Sports. The children competed against each other to find our Sports Champion boy and girl of 2009. They took part in flat races, long jump, shot putt and basketball shooting. The winners will receive their prizes at the Leavers' Assembly.

In the afternoon the whole school went outside to enjoy an afternoon of sports. The P4-7 classes took part in potted sports and each time the pupils completed a task they won points for their house. At the end of the day the points were totalled and although it was close, the winners were Waverley. Well done to all the pupils who participated. Everyone had a great day!

On Wednesday 17th June the Primary 7s were invited by their Primary 1 buddies to a preview of Fairyland. The buddies collected the P7s and took them to their wonderful classroom to show off all their fabulous work and show them round their room. The room was buzzing with excitement. The primary 7s were very impressed at the high standard of work and really enjoyed their tour from their buddy.

TERM 4

The Primary 7s have almost come to the end of their time in Kirklandneuk but what an exciting and enjoyable term they have had. The children have focussed on many health issues, learning about drugs, Heartstart and first aid. This included how to bandage someone if they are bleeding and we were able to practise our skills on each other. The pupils were learning about the dangers of alcohol and the problem of peer pressure. The pupils carried out role plays to look at this issue.

As part of their drugs education they attended a trip to the SECC called “Choices for Life”. The pupils were taught about the dangers of illegal drugs and alcohol through real life experiences of teenagers and through a play performed by PACE. The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip as they were entertained by various singers and bands including the McDonald Brothers! However, as well as enjoying themselves, the pupils left with an important message about making the right choices in their lives.

Many of the pupils attended the residential trip to Ardgour. The children experienced some fantastic activities such as archery, abseiling, orienteering, canoeing and many more. The pupils were very well behaved and took part in the activities with enthusiasm. The other pupils who remained at school had an activities week organised, where they went on trips to the Science Centre, Robertson Park and Xscape. The children thoroughly enjoyed their week.

The pupils are now preparing for their Leavers' Dance which will be held in the last week. They have been practising their dancing skills, learning Scottish dances ready for their ceilidh.

WWII Joyning the Learning

The pupils have now come to the end of their surprise topic! What a busy 8 weeks the class have had! Room 16 has been transformed into a wonderful display of aspects of WWII. The pupils have learned an amazing amount of information about the Home Front and developed their skills in several currciular areas.

The pupils began their topic with a carousel to plan their topic and take responsibility for their own learning. They planned some exciting writing activities they could do related to the topic, considered ways to transform their classrooom, decided on the Big Questions they wanted to research and began thinking ahead to the Open Evening.

The pupils were very motivated from the very start and chose to begin working on a Blitz scene. The excitement took over and they were so keen to put some of their work up on the walls. However, they struggled at the start with the quality of their work and had to work on improving their cutting and painting skills to ensure they would be proud of the final result. As you can see from the pictures, it was worth all the effort. They wrote imaginative stories called the Air Raid which developed their ability to write a cliffhanger. These were written as zig-zag books and displayed on the blitz scene.

The class then chose to create a station scene of pupils being evacuated. They drew and painted a steam train with carriages and added their photos printed off in sepia tones - it looks very effective.

The pupils then transformed the back of their room into a 194os room and kitchen using their art and technology skills to create a number of realistic 3D objects. The living room is very cosy with their wallpaper, fire place and family portraits.In the kitchen they made a stove, cupboard, shelf and mangle as well as the tiled flooring which looks great!

As well as transforming the classroom, the pupils have developed their writing tasks through a variety of core tasks. They imagined what it would like to be an evacuee and wrote letters home to their family and also wrote an evacuation sense poem. These were displayed on the train carriages. The pupils also wrote newspaper articles about the declaration of war. The pupils studied Anderson shelters and completed annotated diagrams giving information about the structure and contents of a shelter. The pupils also focussed on the Blackout and created information leaflets in pairs. Another core task was an invitation written in the style of an old telegram which was tea-stained to look old. These were sent to the parents to invite them to our Open Evening.

The pupils then spent time preparing a play, assembly, learning WWII songs and creating activities for their Open Evening. The children worked so hard and were so enthusiastic right to the very end. They decorated the gym hall and held a VE Day party with entertainment and a selection of rationed foods for the guests. They entered into the spirit of it all by dressing up in 1940s clothing. As part of the Open Evening the parents are asked to write in the comment book and we were delighted to read such positive comments. So many were amazed by the standard of work and couldn't believe how well the pupils had transformed the room. I am so proud of my class, they have worked so hard and we have had such fun in the process. Well done Primary 7, I'm sure you'll remember this for a long long time.

As part of Environment month, the Primary 7 pupils were involved in planting some trees in the infant playground. They were supported by Starling Learning who taught the pupils how to plant trees correctly and how to encourage them to grow. The pupils really enjoyed the experience and were fortunate enough to have a dry day!

Term 3

Primary 7 have now begun a surprise topic which we are really enjoying. The pupils have been busy planning and discussing ways to transform our classroom. We can’t give too much away although all will be revealed to our parents on our Open Evening (date and information coming soon!). Can you guess what the children are busy making?

For our science this term we have been learning about the structure of the earth. We carried out some very fun experiments (including jam donuts and apples) to get us thinking about what is inside our earth. We then researched the topic with Mrs Ronnie at ICT and produced some excellent posters. Once we had learned about the different structures of the earth, we were set a challenge to create a model to show the different layers and then had to present our group models to the class.

Primary 7 have been working on a Global Citizenship topic, we have been learning what a global citizen is. We have studied the work of UNICEF and the Rights of A Child. We spent time comparing the rights we have compared to some children in countries such as Uganda, and realised how fortunate we are.

Primary 7 art projects

Primary 7 have been working on a six week art project in the style of Pablo Picasso with Miss MacKay, an art teacher from Renfrew High School. They have looked at examples of Picasso's work, produced line portraits and 2D shape self-portraits. The final piece is a 3D cubist portrait.

The children also recently produced a collaborative class piece of artwork for the Holocaust art competition. They thought of messages and images that were for peace and against war and discrimination.
